You Won’t Believe This Place Is Real!

Off the side of the US-89 between Springdale and Page I noticed a tiny little sign that said The Toadstools of Grand Staircase National Park.ย  I was immediately intrigued, pulled a U-turn and pulled into the tiny and almost unnoticeable parking lot. I figured there had to mean some sort of rock that looked like a toadstool, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to walk into.

The Toadstools of Grand Staircase National Park – how amazing are these formations?!

As I approached the Toadstools of Grand Staircase National Park I felt more and more like I had left earth and somehow landed myself on the moon! The entire area looked completely lunar with different rock formations, crevices and craters…not to mention the giant toadstool shaped rock formations jutting up in random places!

On my way out I read the information board and learned that the toadstools at Grand Staircase National Park are created when boulders roll off of the surrounding cliffs.

The boulders are comprised ofย  dakota sandstone (the lighter material) and entrada sandstone (the brown material) which is much hardier than the dakota sandstone. This means that over time the boulders erode into these toadstool shapes!

These toadstools and Grand Staircase National Park in general are quite extraordinary!

Have you ever seen toadstool rock formations like this? I’d love to know if another place similar to the Grandstaircase National Park exists!

  1. This is the first time that I’ve heard of this national park. It’s so exciting that there is really so much more to explore. And you are right – the rock formations are out of this world. That must have been more breathtaking to see and experience in person.

  2. That looks amazing, I can imagine how in awe you would be of such a place standing there! It was a very experience for me in Spitzkoppe, Namibia. The rock formations there are definitely out of this world!

  5. Such a unique place to have stumbled upon. It really does look like a scenery from outer space…well from what the movies tell me! This kind of reminds me of the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan…it seriously looked like a scene from Mars. Toadstools sounds interesting…what a cool name!
